I am constantly asked by people how to improve your Google rankings. I always tell them the same things. I decided to write out my list of ways you too can increase your keyword rankings. If you follow these steps, you will see an increase in rankings.
- Website Content. Your website content has to be your number one priority. You will need to write a page of content about the keyword(s) you are trying to rank for. The content needs to be directed to the user, i.e. the searcher and has to answer the fundamental question the user is searching for. I recommend a minimum of 700 for any page of content. If you have an eCommerce website, I highly recommend that you write descriptions for each product. I know this can be a daunting task, but if you tackle 15 products a day, you can 105 product descriptions a week and 450 a month. Google has Panda Algorithm that targets and penalize low content. This same algo rewards high quality content too.
Meta Data. Your page titles and descriptions need to be optimized to A. attract the user and B. tell the searcher what your page is about. If you are selling blue widgets, a proper meta title will be: Blue Widgets For Sale | domain name. A proper meta description would be: Blue Widgets For Sale. Domain name has a hugh selection of Blue Widgets to purchase. Shop with us today!!! Ignore Meta Keywords. This is an old outdated practice. The only people using meta keywords is bad seo companies and your competitors to see what you are trying to rank for.
3. Images. I recommend having 2 to 3 images per page of content. You image needs to have a title and Alt Image tag to describe what the image is about. This image is set as: how to improve search engine ranking on google. I saved the image as how to improve search engine ranking on google and added that as my title and alt image tag.
- Sitemap. You will need an xml site and will need to submit it to Google Search Counsel. In order to do this, you will need a Google Analytic account and will need to add the tracking code to your website. This is be highly valuable as you can the traffic and types of visitors coming to your website. In GSC, you will need to submit the sitemap this will start the Google crawl experience. If you have never done this, Google has been already crawling your website, but this will you know how many pages of your website Google is indexing.
Mobile Friendly Website. You have to make sure your website is mobile responsive. Google has been rewarding websites that are mobile responsive for a year now. If you need to verify that your website is mobile responsive, you can use the Mobile Friendly test.
Page Load Speed. Google is beyond concerned about user experience. One major user experience areas that they focus on is page load speed. If a page loads over 1 sec, the typical user will leave that page. You can test your page speed directly at Google. They will check your load time and grade you too. You want to be at least a 90 for mobile and desktop. If you are not, then they will show you the areas that you need to improve.
Link Building. Let me say that link building is not a dirty word. Google has put a lot of fear into site owners to feel that they should shy away from any type of link building. The latest version of Webmaster Guidelines, states you should keep the amount of links to any give page to 1000 links. You need to steer clear of over keyword optimized anchor tags. If I was trying to rank for blue widgets, I would not create tons anchor tag links on blue widgets.
